Picnic with the Tulips

Katie Schur

May is the perfect time to spend time outside and admire all of the blooms around you. This week, I traveled to Wicked Tulips in Johnston, RI. It's a u-pick flower farm where you can roam their beautiful tulip fields and craft your own bouquet. They sell out every weekend in May so I took advantage of their "Early Bird" special on Tuesday and got to the farm at 7 a.m. I'm not a morning person, but I'm so thankful that I rolled out of bed for this.

Tulips make such a lovely centerpiece for any kind of outdoor gathering. If you don't have a flower farm near you, try finding a flower stand that carries different varieties.

At the farm, I set up a an impromptu picnic to enjoy a quick breakfast and admire these blooms.

These blue picnic tables were the perfect place to enjoy my hand-picked bouquet and eat these open-faced sandwiches with bread, brie, strawberries and honeycomb. I also brought along an apple for extra sweetness.

Recipe for mini brie and strawberry toasts

  • 4 oz. of brie
  • 1 package of strawberries
  • 1 crusty french style baguette
  • 1 honeycomb with honey for drizzling on top

Instructions: Slice bread into bite size slices. Spread on brie, add a sliced strawberry and drizzle with honey comb and honey. Also goes great with a slice of apple!

Picnic packing checklist:

  • Ingredients for mini toasts (above)
  • Refreshments (I brought my coffee in a to-go container to help me wake up)
  • Picnic blanket
  • Cutting board
  • Knife for slicing bread and apples/strawberries
  • Spreader for getting the brie on the toasts
  • Picnic plates
  • Napkins
  • Hand santizer
  • Scissors (for cutting tulips)
  • Vase (for placing tulips into)

If you're visiting Wicked Tulips in RI, they have baskets that you can use to place your flowers in while picking. They also have vases available for sale. I was glad that I brought my own. There was a watering hose available for customers so my tulip enjoyed a drink of water on the car ride home.

I hope you enjoyed these pics and can have the opportunity to visit a flower farm this spring. It sure gets you into the spring spirit. What spring activities are you up to this weekend? If you're picnicking for Mothers' Day, I'd love to see your pics tag me @picnicperfectco.
